Local Network Event: NE and Yorkshire, 8th March, 11.45am - 2.30pm

Food as a source of social sustainability

The event will consider ‘food’ as a source of social sustainability through 3 very different lenses, namely student employability, responsible leadership and connecting communities

The student employability session will showcase the work carried out with Thirteen Group. Thirteen Group have recently worked with Teesside University International Business School final year undergraduate students to create business ideas which encourage sustainability through a series of challenges, including projects focusing on creating sustainable solutions towards food poverty. This ‘real time’ project equips students with increased awareness of the importance of food within the local ecosystem, and how organisations such as Thirteen can contribute towards the Sustainable Development Goals

The responsible leadership session will explore the work of Recovery Connections and how the charity supports individuals to re-connect with themselves, family and society throughout their recovery from addiction. Recovery Connections play an active role in the delivery of an MBA module, The Sustainable Organisation. This module focusses on how businesses must adapt to the big re-set, and recognise that leaders have a moral responsibility to their employees and stakeholders, as well as an economic responsibility. Recovery Connections have grown to become a portfolio charity, with a restaurant and event space at the heart of the business model. They can provide evidence of contribution to several of the SDG’s.

Connecting communities will be further showcased with the work of Teesside University’s incubator and business accelerator space. Delegates will tour the Launchpad community bakery and be introduced to how baking has helped refugees and communities suffering from food poverty in Middlesbrough. This project is about civic engagement and placing the university at the heart of the local eco-system to help regenerate communities.
